During their terrifying confinement, a simple yet profound request emerged: they wanted to listen to Foo Fighters' music to keep their spirits up. This plea reached the ears of Foo Fighters' charismatic frontman, Dave Grohl, who, in a gesture of incredible empathy, promised them beer and concert tickets once they were safely rescued.
Grohl himself shared the impact of this request with the Launceston crowd, recalling, "They asked for water and an iPod with Foo Fighters music on it." He emphasized the profound significance of the moment for him, stating, "it really hits home." And last night, at York Park, that profound connection was palpable as Grohl and Mr. Webb embraced on stage, a powerful symbol of resilience and shared humanity. But here's where it gets interesting... While the reunion stole the show, the event also highlighted the immense scale of the concert. A massive crowd of 26,000 fans packed into York Park. Tasmania Police reported that the vast majority of attendees were well-behaved, enjoying a fantastic night out and showing respect for fellow concertgoers. However, as with any large gathering, there were a few incidents. Police dealt with a small number of public order issues, including minor scuffles and instances of intoxication. In total, 10 people were removed from the venue, two were arrested for assault, and there were five minor disturbances. Importantly, police conducted wand searches to ensure safety, and no weapons were found.
And this is the part most people miss... Hosting this one-off, sold-out show came at a significant cost, with the state government and Launceston City Council, through Stadiums Tasmania, investing $650,000. This was a considerable investment to bring the Foo Fighters to Launceston for their first performance in Tasmania since 2015 and their debut in the city itself. The concert sold out in what was described as "record time," underscoring the immense demand.
