NBA's Global Reach: Abu Dhabi Partnership, Record Viewership on Prime (2026)

The NBA is taking its global reach to new heights! In a bold move, the National Basketball Association has renewed its ties with Abu Dhabi, securing a long-term deal to bring more basketball action to the UAE.

But here's the game-changer: This agreement ensures pre-season games in Abu Dhabi annually, building upon the two games hosted each year since 2022. And that's not all—the NBA is setting up an NBA Global Academy branch in Abu Dhabi, nurturing local and global basketball talent. This strategic move aims to solidify the UAE's presence in the international basketball scene.

The deal brings a host of benefits, including expanded NBA marketing, youth development programs, and fan engagement activities. Experience Abu Dhabi, the DCT's tourism brand, will continue as the NBA's official tourism partner, expanding its reach to Africa, Asia, and Latin America, in addition to existing markets.

Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Abu Dhabi DCT chair, shared his vision: "Our extended partnership with the NBA cements Abu Dhabi's status as the Middle East's basketball hub. It's about inspiring our youth, diversifying our economy, and elevating our global appeal." The DCT's commitment to elite basketball is evident, having partnered with Europe's EuroLeague and EuroCup competitions in 2025.

And here's where it gets exciting: The NBA's recent international games in Berlin and London sparked a viewership frenzy on Prime Video. Amazon's OTT platform reported record-breaking numbers, with the Berlin game becoming the most-watched regular-season game in Germany and the London game achieving a 90% viewership increase compared to 2019.

Prime Video's 11-year, $1.8 billion broadcast deal with the NBA, which includes an expanded game package in various territories, has paid off. Europe's NBA viewership has soared, with a remarkable 184% growth, particularly in the UK and Germany.

Alex Green, Prime Video Sport's Managing Director, International, noted the untapped demand for NBA content in Europe, with audiences eagerly tuning in for primetime weekend games. The NBA's global expansion is not just about basketball; it's about fostering community, inspiring youth, and creating lasting connections across borders.

What do you think about the NBA's global strategy? Is this a slam dunk for the league's future, or is there a risk of spreading themselves too thin? Share your thoughts below!
