A historic tribute is being built in Telford, and it's a project that will make a big splash!
The Captain Matthew Webb Swimming and Fitness Centre is under construction, named after the legendary first man to conquer the English Channel. This new leisure hub, located in Dawley, Telford, will feature a five-lane pool and a state-of-the-art gym.
But here's where it gets controversial... The facilities are being built at Telford Langley School, and while some might question the location, the council has a clear vision. They argue that the area desperately needs more swimming options, and with an estimated 150,000 annual uses, this pool will be a game-changer.
The local authority is footing the bill and will operate the centre once it opens its doors next year. And this is the part most people miss: the development will also benefit the school by converting their health and fitness room into much-needed teaching space.
Last year marked the 150th anniversary of Captain Webb's historic swim across the channel, a feat that took him less than 21 hours and 45 minutes. A true adventurer and stuntman, Webb's famous words, "Nothing great is easy," still resonate today. Sadly, his life ended prematurely in 1883 during a brave attempt to swim the Whirlpool Rapids near Niagara Falls.
