Hassett, an economist, has been pushing for legislation that would replicate the government's Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) for private-sector workers without employer-sponsored retirement plans. This proposal, which has been reintroduced by Senators John Hickenlooper and Thom Tillis, along with Representatives Lloyd Smucker and Terri Sewell, aims to make the proven TSP model accessible to a broader range of working Americans, particularly those with lower incomes.
In a 2021 editorial, Hassett and economist Teresa Ghilarducci argued that the government should make the TSP model available to a wide range of working Americans, especially those below a certain income level. The idea has also been pitched to the Trump administration by Alex von Fürstenberg, the son of fashion designer Diane von Fürstenberg, who is filming a documentary on the project.
However, the proposal has faced some controversy. While Trump praised Australia's retirement savings plan, known as superannuation, at a press conference, and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent also made positive comments about it, the Trump administration's stance on the proposal remains unclear. Lobbying disclosures reveal that von Fürstenberg has been working with firms like Miller Strategies and Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck on retirement-related issues.
This plan could potentially spark a debate about the role of government in retirement savings.
